Getting Started — Kraken, MetaMask, XMarkets: The Complete Guide
This guide walks the full journey, step by step: open a Kraken account and buy AVAX, set up a MetaMask wallet and move your AVAX into it, buy OMC, XMA and CJV on XMarkets, and — whenever you want — send AVAX back to Kraken and take your money out in Canadian dollars. If you can follow a recipe, you can do this. Work through it in order the first time, and go slowly at any step that moves money.
What you need before you start: a computer or phone, a government photo ID (for Kraken’s identity check), and a pen and paper for your wallet’s recovery phrase. In the standard journey, people buy about $600 of AVAX on Kraken and then $200 each of OMC, XMA and CJV on XMarkets — treat those as example amounts; every step works with smaller amounts while you learn.
Three safety rules that protect everything else:
- Your wallet’s Secret Recovery Phrase is the master key to your money. Write it on paper, keep it somewhere safe, and never type it into a website, never send it to anyone, and never let any support person ask for it — real support never will.
- Only install MetaMask from metamask.io, and only use the real sites: kraken.com, xmarkets.ca, omnichain.ca, ccjv.ca. Bookmark them.
- The first time you send anything to a new address, send a small test amount first and confirm it arrives.
Part A — Set up Kraken and buy AVAX
Kraken is the regulated exchange where you turn Canadian dollars into AVAX, the currency the whole ecosystem runs on.
- Open the invite link: https://invite.kraken.com/JDNW/zb1j1899 and choose Create account. Enter your email and a strong, unique password, and turn on two-factor authentication when offered.
- Verify your identity. Kraken will ask for your legal name, address, and a photo of your government ID. This is a legal requirement for Canadian exchanges; approval usually takes minutes to a day.
- Add Canadian dollars. In Kraken, go to Funding / Deposit, choose CAD, and follow the Interac e-Transfer (or EFT) instructions. Send the money from your bank and wait for it to show as available — Interac is often within the hour.
- Buy AVAX. Go to Trade (or the Buy/Sell screen), choose AVAX, enter the dollar amount, review the total including Kraken’s fee, and confirm. You now own AVAX. It can sit safely in Kraken until your wallet is ready — do Part B next.
Part B — Set up MetaMask and fund it with AVAX
MetaMask is your wallet: the app that holds your AVAX and tokens and signs your transactions. You — not any website — control it.
- Install MetaMask from metamask.io (browser extension for Chrome/Firefox, or the official mobile app). Choose Create a new wallet and set a password for this device.
- Save your Secret Recovery Phrase. MetaMask shows you 12 words. Write them on paper in order, store the paper somewhere private and fire-safe, and confirm the words when MetaMask asks. This phrase is the only way back into your wallet if you lose your device — and anyone who has it has your money. There is no “forgot phrase” reset and no company can recover it for you.
- Add the Avalanche network. The ecosystem runs on Avalanche C-Chain. The easiest way: later, when you connect your wallet on xmarkets.ca, MetaMask will offer to add/switch to Avalanche automatically — approve it. To add it manually now: MetaMask → network menu (top left) → Add network → Add a network manually, and enter: Network name Avalanche C-Chain; RPC URL https://api.avax.network/ext/bc/C/rpc; Chain ID 43114; Currency symbol AVAX; Block explorer https://snowtrace.io. Save, and switch to Avalanche.
- Copy your wallet address. In MetaMask, with Avalanche selected, click your account name/address (it starts with 0x) to copy it. This address is safe to share — it is how people and exchanges send things to you.
- Withdraw AVAX from Kraken to MetaMask. In Kraken: Funding → Withdraw → AVAX. Paste your MetaMask address, and for the network choose Avalanche (this matters: AVAX sent on the wrong network can be lost). Enter the amount, review the withdrawal fee, and confirm with two-factor. For a first transfer, send a small amount.
- Confirm arrival. Within a minute or two the AVAX appears in MetaMask under the Avalanche network. You can also paste your address into snowtrace.io to see the transaction on the public ledger. Once the test amount arrives, repeat the withdrawal for the rest if you wish.
Part C — Fund your wallet with OMC, XMA and CJV via XMarkets
XMarkets (xmarkets.ca) is the ecosystem’s market. The treasury sells OMC, XMA and CJV directly at the fixed utility price of 1 token = 1 AVAX.
C1 — How to Buy Direct
- Go to xmarkets.ca/buy-direct/ and click Connect Wallet. Approve the connection in MetaMask (and approve the switch to Avalanche if it asks). You will know you are connected when a small pill showing your address — like 0x563e…77B8 — appears next to the Connect Wallet button.
- Find the listing for the token you want. Treasury listings show the treasury as the seller (0x8071…4e26) and a price of 1 AVAX per token.
- Enter the amount in Amount to buy and click Buy Listing. The page shows you a quote from the exchange contract, then MetaMask asks you to confirm. The total is the token amount in AVAX plus a small Avalanche network fee (paid in AVAX, usually a fraction of a cent to a few cents).
- Confirm in MetaMask. When the page reads “Purchase confirmed” with a transaction ID, the tokens are in your wallet. If a token balance does not display in MetaMask, add it: MetaMask → Import tokens → paste the token’s contract address (OMC 0xf23BBc223438b0ec81f69efe2699325E8EB67e75, XMA 0x0345b81642f0AAF50350Efc6Ce0d08CDA35951c7, CJV 0x02E7769903c7069A909bc951D297d9D2F504393B).
- Repeat for each of OMC, XMA and CJV. Holding OMC unlocks mining uploads on omnichain.ca; holding CJV unlocks module subscriptions on ccjv.ca.
A note on fees: a 3% market fee applies to purchases. On treasury listings the treasury receives both the sale proceeds and the fee, so the full amount stays in the ecosystem treasury that funds mining payouts and network costs. On community listings (the next section), the seller receives 97% and the treasury receives the 3% fee.
C2 — How to Sell Direct
Any holder can sell tokens to other buyers by creating a listing at their own price.
- Go to xmarkets.ca/sell-direct/ and connect your wallet (same as above).
- Choose the token, the amount, and your asking price per token in AVAX. Community listings trade at the seller’s price — there is no guaranteed buyer and no guaranteed price.
- Click to create the listing. MetaMask first asks you to approve the exchange contract to move the listed tokens, then to confirm creating the listing. Your tokens move into the exchange contract’s escrow, where they sit until the listing sells or you cancel.
- When a buyer purchases from your listing, the AVAX — minus the 3% market fee — arrives directly in your wallet. You can cancel an unsold listing at any time from the same page, and your escrowed tokens return to you in full.
C3 — How to Swap
Swaps exchange one ecosystem token for another at a fixed 1:1 rate with zero swap fee, paid from the exchange’s own inventory.
- Go to xmarkets.ca/swap/ and connect your wallet.
- Choose From and To tokens (the lists are alphabetical) and enter the Amount. The quote line shows exactly what you will receive — at 1:1, 100 in means 100 out, with the fee shown as 0.
- Click Preview Swap to check the quote, then Approve & Swap. The first time you swap a given token, MetaMask asks for two confirmations: an approval (permission for the contract to spend that token — this is what “transaction confirmed” refers to if you see it at this stage) and then the swap itself. Later swaps of the same token usually need only the swap confirmation.
- When the page reads “Swap confirmed” with a transaction ID, the new tokens are in your wallet. Swaps are limited by the exchange’s inventory of the token you are receiving; if a swap ever reports insufficient inventory, the exchange simply cannot fill that size right now — try a smaller amount. A failed (reverted) swap moves no tokens.
Part D — Send AVAX back to Kraken and withdraw Canadian dollars
- Get your Kraken deposit address. In Kraken: Funding → Deposit → AVAX, and make sure the network is Avalanche. Copy the deposit address Kraken shows you. (Use only this deposit address — it is different from your MetaMask address.)
- Send from MetaMask. In MetaMask (Avalanche network): Send → AVAX, paste the Kraken deposit address, enter the amount, and confirm. Keep a small amount of AVAX in your wallet to pay the network fee. Send a small test amount the first time.
- Wait for Kraken to credit it. After the transaction confirms on Avalanche and Kraken’s confirmations complete (usually a few minutes), the AVAX shows in your Kraken balance.
- Sell AVAX for CAD. In Kraken, Trade / Sell: choose AVAX → CAD, enter the amount, review, and confirm.
- Withdraw to your bank. Funding → Withdraw → CAD, choose Interac e-Transfer or EFT, enter your bank details, and confirm. Your Canadian dollars are back in your bank account.
Every transaction you make is recorded on the public Avalanche ledger — you can look any of them up by pasting the transaction ID or your wallet address into snowtrace.io. Omnichain tokens are utility instruments: they are earned through participation, held for access to platform features, and spent on services.
